Active Families and Caregiver Tax Credits

Wall Announces Tax Breaks for Families
Saskatchewan Party’s New Ideas Help Parents, Caregivers

Brad Wall has announced a Saskatchewan Party government will introduce two tax changes to assist parents with the cost of children’s activities and to assist families caring for a parent or an adult dependant with a disability.

Wall said the Saskatchewan Party will introduce a new Active Saskatchewan Families Benefit of up to $150 per year for each child age six to 14, to assist with the cost of cultural, recreational and sports activities.

“These kinds of positive activities help children develop and help them to become responsible young adults,” Wall said.  “Children who are involved in extra-curricular activities perform better in school, are in better shape physically, and are less likely to get involved in negative behaviors like smoking, drug use and crime.

“We want to encourage parents to get their children involved in sports or cultural activities, but we know the cost can be a problem.  The new Active Saskatchewan Families Benefit will help with that cost by providing up to $150 a year for each child.”

Wall also announced that a Saskatchewan Party government will double the Caregiver Personal Tax Credit for persons taking care of a parent or grandparent aged 65 or older in their home, or persons who have an adult-aged dependent with a disability living in their home.  This will increase the benefit from about $442 to $884 per year.

“More and more families are taking care of their parents in their own home and we want to recognize the contribution they are making,” Wall said.  “This change will help secure the future for those families taking care of dependants with disabilities.

“The Saskatchewan Party has new ideas to secure the future and make Saskatchewan the best province in Canada for families.”
