Wall To Deliver Significant Property Tax Relief to Homeowners and Farmers
Brad Wall has announced that a Saskatchewan Party government will deliver significant property tax relief to both homeowners and farmers by doubling the education property tax rebate over the next four years.
A homeowner with a $200,000 home will save about $1,460 in education property taxes over four years under the Saskatchewan Party plan – about $550 more than under the NDP. A farmer with two sections of land would save about $11,000 over four years under the Saskatchewan Party plan – about $4300 more than under the NDP. The tax rebate is automatically applied to the homeowner’s or farmer’s property tax notice.
“Under this NDP government, Saskatchewan property owners pay the highest education property taxes in Canada,” Wall said.
“In the last election, Lorne Calvert promised to reduce property taxes. Then he turned around and raised the PST and his Finance Minister admitted that the NDP doesn’t like to talk about tax hikes at election time.
“A Saskatchewan Party government will provide meaningful property tax relief without any of the NDP’s hidden tax hikes.”
The Saskatchewan Party plan will be phased in over four years, with the current 10 per cent rebate for homeowners increasing to 12 per cent, then 15 per cent, then 17 per cent and then 20 per cent over the next four years. On agricultural land, the current 38 per cent rebate will increase to 47 per cent, then 56 per cent, then 66 per cent and then 80 per cent over then next four years.
Doubling the education property tax rebate will cost a total of $280 million over four years, increasing from $25 million in the first year to $120 million in the fourth year.
Wall said a Saskatchewan Party government will also help school boards to improve education and keep taxes as low as possible by increasing K-12 education funding by 20 per cent, or $118 million, over four years.
“A Saskatchewan Party government will work with school boards and parents to secure the future of education in Saskatchewan,” Wall said. “We will be looking to develop long-term solutions to ensure that K-12 education is properly funded and the education portion of the property tax is reduced.”
