Brad Wall Pledges Gang Crack Down and Crime Fighting Plan
The NDP Record: Worst Crime Rates in Canada for Nine Straight Years

Saskatchewan Party Leader Brad Wall says there’s no reason Saskatchewan should have the highest crime rate in Canada and today promised more police officers and new ideas to get tough on crime.

Saskatchewan people deserve to feel safe in their own homes and their own communities,” Wall said.  “Crime and gang activity are no longer just a big city problem, as we’ve seen from recent events.  A Saskatchewan Party government will take action to fight crime and protect our communities.”

Wall said a Saskatchewan Party government will work to make Saskatchewan safer by:

- increasing funding to fight gangs;
- hiring more police officers
- strengthening laws to get tough on crime and drunk driving;
- cracking down on drugs and crime in prisons;
- introducing new measures to protect children from crime; and
- funding more addiction treatment beds to reduce drug and alcohol addiction that leads to crime.

“The NDP has never fulfilled the promise they made eight years ago to hire 200 new police officers,” Wall said.  “We will finally fulfill their promise plus an additional 100 new police officers – a total of 120 new officers over the next four years.”

Wall said a Saskatchewan Party government will also increase funding to combat organized crime and gangs in Saskatchewan and work with other provinces to create a western Canadian gang member database to assist police in identifying gang members.  A Saskatchewan Party government will also ban gang colours and paraphernalia in jails, institute mandatory drug testing, re-charge offenders caught with drugs in prison, and hire more corrections officers to eliminate drugs and gangs in jails.

“We also want to ensure that families, children and seniors feel safe in their own communities,” Wall said.  “That’s why we will double existing funding to stop sexual predators who prey on children over the internet, and we will launch a $2 million program to provide security systems to low-income seniors and seniors who have been victims of break-ins.”

A Saskatchewan Party government will also get tough on repeat drunk drivers, who threaten the safety of everyone on Saskatchewan’s roads and highways,” Wall said.  “We will direct Crown Prosecutors to seize the vehicles of those convicted of three or more drunk driving offenses.  A safer Saskatchewan is an important step in securing the future.
