June 05, 2014

Melfort— MLA Kevin Phillips will run for a second term after his nomination tonight as the Saskatchewan Party candidate in Melfort for the next provincial election.

“I want to thank the constituents of Melfort for their support,” Phillips said. “I am excited to be their Saskatchewan Party candidate in the next election.”

Phillips was first elected to the Saskatchewan Legislature in the 2011 provincial election.

Phillips is the vice-chair of the caucus’ Policy Committee on Intergovernmental Affairs and Justice, and a member of the legislature’s Standing Committee on Intergovernmental Affairs and Justice.

Phillips has lived in the Melfort constituency for over forty years. He worked in the business and advertising industry as a partner with the Melfort Journal for over 25 years. During that time, he sat on the board of the Canadian Community Newspaper Association and the Saskatchewan Weekly Newspapers Association. Phillips served as mayor of Melfort for five years, leading tremendous growth initiatives in residential and commercial areas of Melfort. He was also vice-chair of the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association SUMAssure Reciprocal Insurance Company.

Phillips is proud of the provincial government’s commitment to municipal revenue sharing.

“In 2014-15, our government will distribute nearly $257 million to municipalities in municipal revenue sharing,” Phillips said. “A commitment that represents a $130 million increase from 2007-08.”

Phillips is excited to be part of the Saskatchewan Party team, which is focused on delivering balanced budgets.

“I am pleased to be a member of a responsible, forward thinking government,” Phillips said. “It has been a priority of our government to utilize tax payers’ dollars responsibly. I am proud that we have delivered our commitment by balancing seven consecutive provincial budgets."

With Phillips nomination as the candidate for Melfort, the Saskatchewan Party has nominated 32 candidates for the next provincial election.
