Saskatchewan Party Will Double the Active Families Benefit

October 03, 2024

Families will receive $300 a year per child to help pay for sports and cultural activities

A re-elected Saskatchewan Party government will double the Active Families Benefit from $150 to $300 per year per child.  The Active Families Benefit reimburses parents for the cost of their children taking part in sports, arts, cultural and recreational activities.

“We all know how beneficial it is to get our kids involved in sports or artistic activities like music and dance lessons,” said Premier Scott Moe, who made the announcement today.  “We also know the cost of those activities has gone up just like the cost of most other things, so the Saskatchewan Party wants to make it more affordable for parents to put their kids in those kinds of activities.”

The income threshold to qualify for the Active Families Benefit will also double, making more families eligible to receive the benefit.  Currently, families must have an income of $60,000 or less to qualify.   The income threshold will double so that families with income up to $120,000 will now qualify for the benefit.

The Active Families Benefit for a child with a disability will also double from $200 to $400 a year.

Today’s announcement follows a number of other Saskatchewan Party platform announcements designed to make life more affordable for Saskatchewan people, including:

  • Reducing provincial income tax, saving a family of four $3400 and a senior couple $3100 over four years;
  • Increasing the Graduate Retention Program benefit by 20 per cent for a maximum of $24,000; and
  • Increasing the Low Income Tax Credit by 20 per cent over four years.

“That’s on top of our government’s decision to protect Saskatchewan families by removing the Trudeau-NDP carbon tax on home heating,” Moe said.  “The Saskatchewan Party will be making more affordability announcements in the days ahead.  Saskatchewan is the most affordable place in Canada to live and your Saskatchewan Party government will make sure it stays that way.

“Making life more affordable for Saskatchewan families – it’s part of our plan to keep our economy strong and our future bright.”
