SaskParty Will Extend Carbon Tax Exemption on Home Heating for Another Year
October 15, 2024A re-elected Saskatchewan Party government will extend the exemption from the Trudeau-NDP carbon tax on natural gas and electricity used for home heating.
Last fall, after Trudeau provided a carbon tax exemption on home heating oil primarily for Atlantic Canada but then refused to extend the exemption to other forms of home heating, Premier Scott Moe announced the Saskatchewan Party government will protect Saskatchewan homeowners by exempting residential natural gas and electricity used for home heating.
The initial exemption on natural gas was from January 1 to December 31, 2024 and the exemption on electricity used for home heating was from January 1 to April 30, 2024.
Moe said the natural gas exemption will be extended for another year until the end of 2025 while the electricity exemption will be in place during the cold weather months, from November 1, 2024 to April 30, 2025.
The natural gas exemption will save the average household about $400 this year. It will save the average household $480 next year if the federal government goes ahead with its next planned carbon tax increase on April 1, 2025.
“The real solution is for the Trudeau-NDP government to remove the carbon tax completely or, if that doesn’t happen, for voters to remove the Trudeau-NDP government, which we will have a chance to do next year,” Moe said. “Until then, the Saskatchewan Party will continue to ensure tax fairness for Saskatchewan families by keeping the carbon tax off home heating.”
Moe said the Saskatchewan Party is focused on making life more affordable, which the federal government could do by taking the consumer carbon tax off everything for everyone.
“Since we took the carbon tax off home heating, the inflation rate in Saskatchewan has been about half the national rate,” Moe said. “If the Trudeau-NDP government was actually serious about bringing down inflation, they would axe the carbon tax.”
